Principles of Systematic Zoology by Ernst Mayr
This text is intended for senior or postgraduate courses in systematics, particularly animal taxonomy. Practical suggestions for taxonomic practice are included and explanations of the basic concepts of taxonomy are emphasized as well as the definition of traditional terms used in taxonomy. The treatment of taxonomy is in two parts. Part A is devoted to microtaxonomy and Part B is devoted to macrotaxonomy. There is a new chapter on the methods of numerical taxonomy, and an extensive treatment of the new approaches in taxonomy.
Ernst Mayr ist Professor emeritus fur Zoologie an der Harvard University (Alexander-Agassiz-Lehrstuhl). Der 93jahrige Wissenschaftler, der in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen ist, zahlt zu den bedeutendsten Biologen der Welt und hat insbesondere der Evolutionsbiologie zahlreiche Impulse verschafft. Nach dem Studium der Medizin, Biologie und Philosophie in Greifswald und Berlin sowie mehreren langen Forschungsreisen wurde er 1932 Kustos am American Museum of Natural History in New York. 1953 nahm er dann einen Ruf an die Harvard University an, der er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1975 (und danach) treu blieb. Mayr ist Autor und Herausgeber von 18 Buchern, darunter so einflussreichen Werken wie Systematik und der Ursprung der Arten (1942), Artbegriff und Evolution (1963), Grundlagen der zoologischen Systematik (1969), Evolution und die Vielfalt des Lebens (1976) und Die Entwicklung der biologischen Gedankenwelt (1982).
