F.X. (Father X) S.J. Schouppe, S.J. Schouppe, S.J. Schouppe was a prominent nineteenth-century theologian. Purgatory Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints and The Theology of Hell were his works. Despite the fact that the subject is horrific, his goal with the latter work was not to sensationalize or horrify, but to educate people about the truth of Hell and to instill in them a fear of losing Heaven.

P.V. Tolstoy's The Dogma of Hell was first published in 1883. The Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur were used to print Hickey and Purgatory Explained in the late 1800s.
