Qualitative Data Analysis with ATLAS.ti by Susanne Friese

Are you struggling to get to grips with qualitative data analysis? Do you need help getting started using ATLAS.ti? Do you find software manuals difficult to relate to? Written by a leading expert on ATLAS.ti, this book will guide you step-by-step through using the software to support your research project. In this updated second edition, you will find clear, practical advice on preparing your data, setting up a new project in ATLAS.ti, developing a coding system, asking questions, finding answers and preparing your results.  The new edition features: methodological as well as technical advice numerous practical exercises and examples screenshots showing you each stage of analysis in version 7 of ATLAS.ti  increased coverage of transcription new sections on analysing video and multimedia data a companion website with online tutorials and data sets.   Susanne Friese teaches qualitative methods at the University of Hanover and at various PhD schools, provides training and consultancy for ATLAS.ti at the intersection between developers and users.

As an active qualitative researcher, user of ATLASti and mentor of  international research trainees, I found this text to be enormously helpful in assisting both experienced and neophyte researchers on the use of ATLAS.ti.

Particularly welcome new dimensions to the latest version include stronger linkages to project management as this is configured in version 7 of ATLAS.ti, including clear explication of the strategies required for setting up a project when working with survey data, synchronised audio/video and text documents.

Chapter 8 provides an excellent overview of the Noticing, Collecting, and Thinking (NCT) approach to qualitative data analysis and how this might be integrated and simultaneously used with ATLAS.ti. Novice researchers will find this new chapter incalculably beneficial, whilst those who mentor and teach will find the chapter enhances facilitation of learning, and is a vital aid in respect of research mentorship on the topic of ATLAS.ti and qualitative data analysis more generally.

Extremely helpful for the facilitation of learning and research training is the addition of labelling of all the practical hands-on sessions ‘skills training’ and at the beginning of each chapter the boxes that lists all skills training sessions. Along with the companion website, these resources constitute important pedagogical tools.

In summary, the text constitutes an important and essential handbook for all users of ATLAS.ti; newer users will welcome the direct relation to version 7. Dr Susanne Friese once again shares her profoundly deep knowledge of ATLAS.ti, providing the international research community with the quintessential guide to ATLAS.ti.

-- Dr Gina Higginbottom, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Ethnicity and Health, University of Alberta
This is a  ‘no-nonsense’  volume by Susanne Friese.   In her chatty and intimate way she sets out to provide one clear, workable  and flexible method  for the analysis of qualitative data  which maps clearly on to her practical guidance for using ATLAS.ti software.  -- Ann Lewins, Qualitative Data Analysis Services (QDAS)
This book is exceptional in illustrating how to analyze data with ATLAS.ti. This time round, Susanne also brings her huge expertise to the mobile apps world. This second edition will enrich discussions on how diverse approaches can be applied when managing, combining and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.  I recommend  Susanne Friese’s new edition for any student or professional engaged in qualitative data analysis.  -- César A. Cisneros Puebla
In conclusion, this text is a very good new contribution to the field of understanding qualitative methodologies for data analysis. It is an optimal resource for both students and researchers. -- Rafael Alberto Méndez Romero, Colombian School of Engineering
