Rebel without Applause by Lemn Sissay

Lemn Sissay is only 25 but he has already performed his work throughout Britain and in Europe, he has appeared on over forty TV and radio programmes, and written plays for theatre companies in Manchester and for the Edinburgh Fringe. Powerful and often riotously funny, his performances have been called 'awesome', his rapid fire delivery earning him the title '200 words-a-minute man'. His poems have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, in two collections, and on record and tape. Rebel Without Applause is his third collection, following Tender Fingers in a Clenched Fist (Bogle-L'Ouverture, 1988). He appeared on Working Week's Fire in the Mountain album; his own records include Blackvibe (1989) and Lemn Live and Unleashed (1990).
Lemn Sissay is one of the rising legion of excellent black British writers* Caribbean Times *
In Sissay's work, we witness declamation being honed and brought to fine art...This volume of poetry establishes his reputation as an extremely accomplished poet as he moves with consummate skill from loud protest through to quiet reflection - almost pastoral. -- Valerie Bloom
Lemn Sissay was born of Ethiopian parents in Billinge near Wigan in 1967. After doing some rough jobs, he became an arts worker with Commonword in Manchester, and set up Cultureword, the centre for black writers in the North West. He is now a freelance writer and rapper, and sings with the Manchester band Secret Society, who play his songs.
