The Red Of His Shadow by Mayra Montero

A haunting novel, with the power and clarity of a Greek tragedy, that immerses the reader deep in the world of Haitian voodoo. It is holy week and the Haitian sugar cane harvesters can temporarily forget the misery of life on the bateys and lose themselves in the fervour of voodoo worship. But beneath the colourful festivities, ferocious passions rage. A meeting is predicted between the Mistress Zule, a voodoo priestess and spiritual leader and the infamous Simila Bolosse, a rival priest backed by the blood-thirsty tonton macoutes, who has bathed his arm in blood and vowed to fight her to the death. In the depth of his hatred is concealed the passion the two once shared. As the procession makes its way closer and closer, and the tension mounts unbearably, Zule must arm herself with all the rites, rituals and powers she can summon to defend herself in their final, devastating encounter.
Mayra Montero's transfixing new novel offers potent insights into a highly complex world Jane Giles, New York Times; Montero's moist, rich darkness pulses with presences and absences - voodoo spirits call and chatter, birds screech and the frog leaves an ominous silence Kristina Woolnough, Scotland on Sunday; Montero's prose achieves real lyricism Alex Ivanovitch, Observer
