Rethinking Citizenship by Maurice Roche

Citizenship rights have become vital to our sense of personal identity and social membership in modern society. In this book, Maurice Roche argues that today we have to shift from the conventional post-war politics of social rights to a new politics of social obligations and personal responsibility. Recent social changes have created new problems which require rethinking of both social policy and the welfare state. Providing an analysis and assessment of citizenship in developed societies, the book also includes an assessment of contemporary debates about the rise of the "new poverty", the develoment of an "underclass", as well as other "post-industrial" changes affecting employment and family life.
Roche, Maurice: - Maurice Roche is lecturer in sociology at the University of Sheffield, and teaches undergraduate modules on the Sociology of the EU, Leisure, Policy and Society, and the Sociology of Popular Culture, as well as postgraduate modules on Global Social Policy and International Childhood Studies.

He has authored and contributed to a number of titles, including Mega-Events and Modernity: Olympics and Expos in the Growth of Global Culture (Routledge, 2000), Europe and Cosmopolitanism (Liverpool University Press, 2007) and The Handbook of Nations and Nationalism (SAGE, 2006), as well as writing articles for journals such as Citizenship Studies, Time and Society and Cultural Policy.
