The Ring of Bright Water Trilogy by Gavin Maxwell
Fifty years ago Gavin Maxwell went to the west coast of Scotland, to live in an abandoned house on a shingle beach at the bottom of a steep drop with a miniature bay and islands, magical waterfall and encircling stream of vivid water. This trilogy offers a single narrative of Maxwell's story.
In 1945 Gavin Maxwell bought the small Hebridean island of Soay and tried to establish a shark fishery. This resulted in his first book, Harpoon At A Venture. Other books, including the famed Ring Of Bright Water, followed. Gavin died in 1969. Austin Chinn studied classics at Harvard and became editor of 'The Phoenix', a literary magazine. He now lives and writes in rural south-west Vermont.
