Rudolf Nureyev by Cristina Franchi
The first international ballet superstar, Nureyev defected from Russia in 1961 and first appeared with The Royal Ballet in 1962. His phenomenal technique, his appetite for new dance experiences and his flamboyant lifestyle brought ballet to the attention of a wider audience and raised the status of male dancing.
Cristina Franchi is Exhibitions Curator at the Royal Opera House. Each season Cristina draws on the remarkable collections of the Royal Opera House Archives to devise a series of exhibitions to reflect the work of the resident companies, The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera.
