He began his profession as a patient care technician before becoming a combat medic during the Vietnam War. He worked as a medical laboratory technician for three years before graduating from the University of Georgia with a bachelor's degree in zoology and a master's degree in education. He worked as a laboratory technician, then a technologist, then a clinical laboratory manager, and finally as an officer in multiple US Army Reserve Combat Support Hospitals, reaching to the rank of Colonel during this time. Dr. Ridley earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. shortly after finishing a tour of duty with Desert Shield/Desert Storm in the Department of Health and Human Services.
He then completed his studies as a registered nurse, allowing him to bring a critical clinical viewpoint to his position as an educator, which he began in 1992 and continues to this day. Dr. Ridley is the Medical Laboratory Technology Director at West Central Technical College in Waco, Georgia.
