Claus Ascheron studierte Physik an der Universität Leipzig. 1976 erhielt er das Diplom und promovierte 1980. Für die Dissertation erhielt er den Gustav-Hertz-Preis der Physikalischen Gesellschaft. 1986 habilitierte er. Bis 1992 lehrte er an der Universität Leipzig Physik. 1993 weilte er als Gastprofessor an der Australian National University in Canberra. Darauf folgte eine zweijährige Full Professorship an der Kyoto University, Japan. Von 1995 bis 2018 war er als Editor für einen größeren Teil des Physikbuchprogramms des Springer-Verlags in Heidelberg zuständig. Von zahlreichen internationalen Universitäten und Forschungseinrichtungen wurde er eingeladen, Soft-Skill-Kurse zu den Themen dieses Buchs zu geben.
