Torrey, Charles C.: - Charles Cutler Torrey (1863-1956) was an American historian and archaeologist who taught Semitic languages at the University of Andover and Yale University. He founded the American School of Archaeology in Jerusalem and served twice as editor of JAOS. Torrey was known for his idiosyncratic but stimulating views. His arguments remain formidable and are still taken seriously, even where they diverge from general scholarly consensus.
