Marie Borroff (1923–2019) was Sterling Professor of English at Yale University. Her verse translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was first published in 1967; it appeared together with her translations of Patience, Cleanness, Pearl, and St. Erkenwald in The Gawain Poet: Complete Works (2011). She was the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: A Stylistic and Metrical Study and of Traditions and Renewals: Chaucer, the Gawain-Poet, and Beyond (1962, 2003). Laura L. Howes is Professor of English at the University of Tennessee. She is the author of Chaucer’s Gardens and the Language of Convention (1997) as well as several essays on Chaucer’s poetry, Pearl, The Book of Margery Kempe, and other Middle English works.
