Sisu by Joanna Nylund

After you've cultivated the coziness of the Danes (hygge) and achieved the Swedish way of moderation (lagom), then what's next? How about developing your Sisu -- an "untranslatable" Finnish term referring to a mixture of courage, resilience, grit, tenacity, and perseverance. It's a trait that has shaped not just the fate of a nation but continues to be a guiding principle for how Finns live their daily lives. Now it can offer lessons to us all, helping us to:

  • discover our inner strength
  • resolve conflicts at work and home
  • raise kind and resilient children
  • achieve our fitness goals
  • fight for what we believe in
And much more!

Joanna Nylund was born and reared in Finland, where she began her writing career at the age of 15 by writing music reviews for a local publication. She has worked as a translator, journalist, copywriter, and photographer after studying English literature at university and residing in the United Kingdom for a few years. Her husband and she live in Helsinki. Joanna is a regular contributor to ThisIsFinland, the Finnish Foreign Ministry's portal on all things Finnish, and SCAN Magazine, in addition to writing for Finnish newspapers and magazines on issues of culture, literature, and history. When the harsh fall winds begin to batter the Helsinki shoreline where she runs, she has to mix up a little more sisu, but she secretly relishes the challenge. Joanna can be found on Instagram (@joannaulfsdotter), Facebook (@joanna.nylund), and her website (www.joannaulfsdotter.com).
