Along with some general Texas Ranger history, the author recalls his first brush with Indians, the Mason County War, the Horrell-Higgins Feud, Sam Bass and his robber gang, the Salt Lake War, his first fight with Apaches, scouting in Mexico, some undesirable recruits in his own Ranger unit, and the last fight between the Rangers and Apaches. Gillett eventually went on to serve as the captain of the armed guards on the Santa Fe Railroad, and later became the Marshall of El Paso.
