So, Stranger by Topaz Winters

2021 Button Poetry Short Form Poetry Contest Winner

Topaz Winters' third poetry collection spans three countries & three generations. In a far-reaching & deftly-woven series of ars poeticas, Winters questions the boundary between the things we inherit & those we owe, stands at the grave of the American dream, & unspools the enormous grace & guilt of being loved.

So, Stranger stands as a fixed mark between the shifting histories & futures of being a daughter, being an artist, & being an immigrant. If its reader begins as a stranger, they end as part of a lineage: one both of grief & glory, of distance & arrival.

Topaz Winters is a multimodal artist with a background in literature who works as a poet, essayist, editor, creative director, speaker, scholar, actress, and multidisciplinary artist. She is the author of four books (the most recent being Portrait of My Body As a Crime I'm Still Committing, a finalist in the Gaudy Boy Poetry Book & Broken River Awards), as well as the writer and star of the short film SUPERNOVA (dir. Ishan Modi (editor-in-chief and creative director of the arts organization Half Mystic, speaker at the TEDx presentation Healing Is a Verb, and creator of the digital art installation Love Lives Bot on Twitter) is the recipient of honors from the Newark International, Across Asia Youth, Laurie Nelson, My Rode Reel, Singapore International Student, and CINE Golden Eagle Film Festivals. Her research on poetry, identity, and the societal roots of queerness in Singapore was published in the Journal of Homosexuality, the world's oldest and most prestigious peer-reviewed publication dedicated to the study of gender and sexuality. Topaz publishes weekly love letters to a worldwide audience of thousands on her site, topazwinters.com.

Her art explores topics such as flightlessness, resilience, heritage, states of gender, softness and savagery, body positions, and how to make beautiful things for people who are still listening. She's had work published in Sundog Lit, DIALOGIST, and Cosmonauts Avenue, as well as being covered in The Straits Times, The Business Times, and the Boston Poetry Slam, and praised by the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the National YoungArts Foundation, and Button Poetry. She is the youngest Singaporean to receive a Pushcart Prize nomination, the youngest writer to be published by Math Paper Press, and the youngest academic to be published in the Journal of Homosexuality. Topaz adores chai tea, classic rock, wildflowers, and the color of the sky when no one else can see it.

She was born in 1999, lives in Singapore, and attends Princeton University to study literature and film. She is enamored with most things that are silent. She appreciates your presence.
