Social Divisions by Geoff Payne

This view of social fragmentation, inequality and cohesion comprises commissioned articles exploring the key divisions in contemporary society. It includes chapters on class, gender and ethnicity and also dedicated coverage of national identity, age, childhood, sexuality, disability, health, and community. Designed to be both free standing and to contribute to an overall perspective, each chapter comprehensively covers theories and current patterns, offering a critical guide to its field.
GEOFF PAYNE is Professor of Sociology at the University of Plymouth where he was also Dean of Faculty of Human Sciences for seventeen years. He has published inter alia on class, employment, health and community, including New Directions in the Sociology of Health (Falmer, 1990, with P. Abbott) and Sociology in Action (Macmillan, 1994, with M. Cross). He is currently working on industrial, occupational and class changes in post-industrial society.
