The Social Semiotics of Mass Communication by Klaus Bruhn Jensen

This text offers a framework for understanding the key role of the mass media in the social production of meaning. It draws on classic positions on the relations between communications and society, and on recent work in both social sciences and humanities.
′An original and thought-provoking application of the neglected tradition of Peircean semiotics to the systematic study of media reception′ - David Morley, Reader in Communications, Goldsmiths College, University of London

`Jensen′s book offers a number of valuable theoretical and methodological tools for anyone wanting to develop ethnographic and qualitative research into media and audiences, providing many useful ways forward as well as many insights into the philosophical underpinnings of communication research as it relates to the media in social context′ - Journal of Communication

Klaus Bruhn Jensen is a professor in the Department of Media, Cognition, and Communication, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His publications include A Handbook of Media and Communication Research: Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies (Routledge, 2012, 2nd ed.), Media Convergence: The Three Degrees of Network, Mass, and Interpersonal Communication (Routledge, 2010), and the International Encyclopedia of Communication Theory and Philosophy (Wiley-Blackwell, 2016, four volumes and online). Current research focuses on changing patterns of media use in a cross-cultural perspective; his Peoples’ Internet (PIN) project, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, compares media use and communicative practices in China, Europe, and the United States.
