Recounting the period from the first Spanish exploration to the end of the Civil War, the author charts South Carolina's rising national and international importance.Walter Edgar is emeritus professor of history at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and the author or editor of more than a dozen books about the Palmetto State, including The South Carolina Encyclopedia. He is the host of Walter Edgar's Journal and South Carolina from A to Z on SCETV Radio. In 2008 he was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame.
