Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) was one of the most influential German Marxist philosophers of the twentieth century, as well as a notable utopia theorist. His writings include The Principle of Hope, Spirit of Utopia, and Traces, and he was a friend of Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht, and Theodor Adorno.
