Frances Spalding began writing on British art early in her career and quickly established herself as a leading voice in the field, producing articles on the subject in newspapers, magazines, and exhibition catalogues before releasing British Art Since 1900, the first comprehensive survey of twentieth-century British art, which is widely used in schools, colleges, and universities. She went on to become a well-known biographer, writing biographies of Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell, John Minton, Duncan Grant, Gwen Raverat, and the poet Stevie Smith, among others. She has also contributed to the National Portrait Gallery's 'Insight' series with a centenary history of the Tate and an introduction to Bloomsbury. She's a well-known speaker at festivals and other gatherings.
