
Sunken cities by Franck Goddio
Beneath the waters of Abukir Bay, lie the submerged remains of the ancient Egyptian cities Canopus and Thonis-Heracleion, which sank over 1,000 years ago but were brought to the surface by in the 1990s. These ancient artefacts are to be exhibited in Britain in 2016. This book tells the story of these two ancient civilizations.
Franck Goddio is founder of the French IEASM (European Institute for Underwater Archaeology) and discoverer of the city of Herakleion–Thonis 7 km off the Egyptian shore in Aboukir Bay. He also led the excavation of the submerged site of Eastern Canopus and of Antirhodos in the ancient harbour of Alexandria (Portus Magnus). Aurelia Masson-Berghoff is Project Curator, British Museum, Department: Greece and Rome.
