Surreal People by Alexander Klar
The web of friendships within the Surrealist circle was one a key source of inspiration for this close group of artists and writers and many of their greatest works stem from their collaborative approach to the creative process. Stimulated by mutual admiration, these works range from the sketchy 'cadavre exquis' drawings to complete ballet productions. The stories of personal relationships reveal the often hidden iconography of many Surrealist artworks and help us understand the Surrealists' highly referential objects. This is a fascinating look at fifteen relationships between the main participants of Surrealism and features over forty works of art and design from the movement.
Alexander Klar is assistant curator of Surreal Things and a member of the V&A's Research Department. He specialises in European cultural history and is the author of Im Dienste des Bayerischen Konigs (2002).
