Tartans of Scotland by Blair Urquhart

Tartans, with their unique combination of attractive colours and intricate designs, have a long and fascinating history linked with Scottish clans and families, and they survive today as symbols of Scotland's rich heritage. Large amounts of tartan fabrics are woven for clothes, souvenirs and other items, and new tartans are designed every year. This is a concise guide to over 140 tartans, including the main clan and family setts. An introductory section gives a brief history of the origins of the tartans and guidance on how to use the book. The directory lists the tartans in alphabetical order, providing information on the earliest origins of each one, its current status and type, and details of historical clan connections. Each entry is accompanied by a clear colour photograph.
Blair Urquhart is a photographer who became interested in tartans after work that involved photographing them. He has worked as Assistant Registrar of Tartans for the Scottish Tartans Society, where his duties included registering new tartans, looking after the archives and even designing new tartans. He lives in Comrie, Perthshire.
