The Techniques of Glass Engraving by Jonathan Matcham

Jonathan Matcham, an artist etcher and glass engraver and Peter Dreiser, a wheel engraver, have collaborated on this manual to meet the increasing need of the artist-glass engraver for instructions on the methods by which glass may be decorated. Initially, the authors concentrate on traditional copper-wheel engraving techniques, including intaglio (incised) work. Then more specialized engraving techniques are dealt with, such as sculptural relief (raised) work, cut glass and brilliant cutting. The second part covers techniques which are quite different from wheel engraving, but which may occasionally be used in combination with it, such as diamond point and flexible drive engraving, glass etching and sand blasting. Illustrated with examples of intermediate processes and finished work, the text concentrates on the practical aspects of the craft. It should be of use to engravers and teachers as well as the newcomer. R.J. Charleston, formerly Keeper of the Department of Ceramics & Glass, in the Victoria & Albert Museum writes a foreword for the text. Johnathan Matcham started his career as an apprentice wood and metal engraver. Later as a printing craft technologist he was involved in the development of rotary photogravure. He has since expanded his interest in glass, engraving mainly by the diamond point and flexible drive. Peter Dreiser served his trade apprenticeship at the Rheinbach School of Glass. He is a freelance glass engraver, specializing in copper wheel engraving, intaglio and relief work. He was awarded a Crafts Council Bursary in 1977 to tour the glass centres of Europe. He has undertaken many important commissions, and his work is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert and other British museums.
