Journalist Michael Cox explores the origin and rise of the famed Texas Rangers. Starting in 1821 with just a handful of men, the Rangers' first purpose was to keep settlers safe from the feared and gruesome Karankawa Indians, a cannibalistic tribe that wandered the Texas territory. Taking readers through the major social and political movements of the Texas territory and into its statehood, Cox shows how the Rangers were a defining force in the stabilization and creation of Texas. From Stephen Austin in the Rangers' early days through the Civil War, the first eighty years of the Texas Rangers were nothing less than phenomenal, and their efforts set the foundation for the Rangers who keep Texas safe today.

Mike Cox's ancestors come from a long line of Texas ranchers. He started his full-time journalistic career in 1967 as a reporter for the San Angelo Standard-Times, then moved on to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and the Austin American-Statesman. He joined the Texas Department of Public Safety and worked as its spokesman for fifteen years after a twenty-year career in journalism. He retired from the state in 2007, but in 2010 he came out of retirement to serve in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's communications section. He is the author of twenty nonfiction works and is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters.

He got the A.C. Award from the West Texas Book and Music Festival in 2010. For lifetime achievement, the Greene Prize is given. In the Texas hill region, he lives in Fredericksburg.
