James R.Newman's Mathematical World James R.Newman's Mathematical World James R.Newman's Mathe Newman (1907-1966) was a rare mathematician and lawyer who served in the US government in a variety of capacities during and after WWII, including Chief Intelligence Officer at the US Embassy in London. The Universe of Mathematics, a four-volume work, was initially published in 1956 and reissued by Dover in 2000. It was the result of a fifteen-year effort by Newman, then a member of the Scientific American Editorial Board, to compile in one book what he thought to be the most important writings in the area. It is this book that has exposed generations of students to the breadth and depth of mathematical literature.
