The feel-good place to buy books
There's Going to Be a Baby by John Burningham
In a first-time creative pairing, two of the world's most treasured picturebook creators offer a truly delightful book for new-siblings-to-be. (Ages 2 and up) When is the new baby coming? What will we call it? What will he do? We don't really need a baby, do we? With sensitivity and wit, John Burningham follows the swirl of questions in the mind of a young child anticipating a baby sibling with excitement, curiosity, and just a bit of trepidation. In perfect tandem, Helen Oxenbury captures the child's loving interactions with his mother--along with the fanciful future scenarios he imagines for the new family member he has yet to meet. Combining a warm, timeless story with illustrations both freshly enchanting and wonderfully nostalgic, this gorgeous book has all the hallmarks of a classic.
John Burningham works on an ancient boardroom table that originated from The Monkey Club, a school for debutantes in Kensington, and is filled with pens, pencils, paints, papers, and rough drawings in the basement of his London home. He enjoys collecting furniture, statues, stairwells, and old drapes while he isn't working on a novel. He goes around England and France in search of strange items to display in his home or sell to others. John begins the day with a huge mug of strong coffee, followed by lunch with his wife, children's book author and artist Helen Oxenbury, and a drink of fine red wine, preferably French (wine is another of his passions). He's always been fascinated by the third dimension, and many of his books are built layer by layer because he enjoys painting on various materials such as paper, cardboard, and wood to create a range of textures on the printed page.
