This is Norman, A Cat I Know by Cameron Pendergraft
Norman the cat was much loved by an entire neighborhood. Norman loved to roam and didn't live with any family for too long.
For various reasons, several families had to let Norman go.
One time when Norman disappeared, he was gone for five months. On his return, he was hurt, wet, and very thin. After recovering with a family, the cat disappeared again.
