Threads of Steel by Hettie Aston

Threads of Steel is the tale of Bettina Dawson, a young girl who, having just attended her mother's funeral, is at the mercy of her work-shy, drunken, shiftless stepfather and his cruel, mean-spirited mother.

In 1931 Great Britain was still suffering the impact of the Great Depression and it was a difficult time for a fifteen- year-old girl and her three younger siblings to be bereft and alone.

Bettina finds help from her aunt and uncle who are a kind, well respected couple who have no children of

their own.

This engaging story takes the reader into the northern countryside, to an iron and steel town and to quilting with the Durham miners' wives.

It is rich in detail, reflecting the changes in society over the decades with the tremendous growth of technology and health care.

Aston, Hettie: - Now enjoying retirement, Hettie lives in Buckinghamshire with her husband and two cats. Much of her time is devoted to her related passions of sewing, quilting and social history. In her working years she developed an interest in the barriers women faced in all aspects of life, particularly related to health, family and work. Hettie has been heartened to witness, in recent decades, the widening opportunities for women, although life/work balance continues to be tricky for most. In her own career she has helped to support families as a nurse, midwife and health visitor.
