Timber Building in Britain by R W Brunskill

This revised edition of Dr Brunskill's work on timber buildings in Britain and their methods of construction is intended not only for those professionallly concerned with architecture, planning and conservation, but also for anyone interested in old buildings. The book is divided into four sections, the first of which offers an account of structural theories and their development. It goes on to deal with cruck construction, box-frame and post-and-truss assembling, and the problems of roof construction, flooring, partitions, and the decorative work applied to timber. The second part comprises an illustrated glossary of terms used in all types of timber construction work. Then follows a chronological survey of timber buildings from Saxon times to the 19th century, which has been enlarged by the addition of ten further examples, with photographs. The book's final section, which is new to this edition, deals with regional variations and is supplemented by six distribution maps.
R. W. Brunskill has recently retired as professor at De Montfort University, Leicester, and was formerly reader in architecture at the University of Manchester.
