Troy was destroyed by fire between 1200 and 1180 BC; large piles of sling stones, arrowheads and spearheads suggest that it had prepared for a siege, but may have suffered a sudden conquest. At the end, some ploy - which has come to us as the Trojan horse - allowed the Greeks to breach its walls. This work puts legend into its historical context.

Barry S. Strauss is Professor of History and Classics at Cornell University and an expert in Military History. He is the author of nine books, frequently contributes to Washington Post, L.A. Times, and Newsday and is often interviewed by the BBC. He holds Cornell's Clark Distinguished Teaching Award.
