
Turner in the Tate Collection by David Blayney Brown
The Tate owns the largest collection of J.M.W. Turner's work, its Clore Gallery houses the Turner Bequest - the paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks acquired from the artist's estate in 1856. Focusing on 120 works, this volume provides a survey of all the aspects of the Tate Turner collections, introducing not only familiar masterpieces but many other works - such as sheets from sketchbooks or prints. These are included to highlight Turner's achievements and the many themes in his work such as landscape, ideal and naturalistic, British and European, ancient and modern history, marine subjects, literary illustration and images of modern life.
David Blayney Brown is Senior Curator, Tate Collections, responsible for the Turner Collection in the Clore Gallery. His many publications include Catalogue of the Collection of Drawings for the Ashmolean Museum, Turner and Byron, Turner in the Alps, and Romanticism (forthcoming 2001).
