Understanding Deviance by David Downes
This text provides an introduction to the principal theories of crime and social deviance in the European and North American context. This third edition has taken into account all of the most significant developments since 1995. The final chapter presents a spirited defence of the deviance perspective against a number of criticisms. It is argued that theories of deviance have an anticipatory as well as an explanatory role to play.David Downes is Professor Emeritus of Social Administration at the London School of Economics. He is a member of the management committee of the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, and of the Howard League for Penal Reform. Paul Rock is Professor of Social Institutions in the Department of Sociology at the London School of Economics; and a Fellow of the British Academy.
