This book explores the transformation of Beijing’s Shichahai area over four decades, using this historic urban district to shed light on broader trends in Chinese urban development and the evolving interplay between state power, market forces, and social actors.

Drawing on extensive fieldwork and long-term observation, it examines how developers, planners, preservation experts, local governments, residents, and consumers have shaped urban space. Rather than viewing urban transformation as a straightforward result of policy or capital, the book highlights the complex processes of collaboration, negotiation, conflict, and compromise that have redefined Shichahai’s physical and social landscape. Combining accessibility with analytical depth, it provides a compelling account of heritage preservation, redevelopment, community dynamics, and everyday urban life in transitional China.

Wang Tianfu is a Professor, PhD supervisor, and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University. His research focuses on urban sociology, social stratification and mobility, family sociology, and social research methods.

Xiao Lin is an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Sociology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. His research interests include urban sociology, community studies, and social development and governance.
