Vernon Scannell's varied career has included serving in The Gordon Highlanders in World War II and that of a professional boxer. His poetry has been awarded a number of prizes including the Heinemann Award for Literature and Cholmondoley Poetry Prize as well as the Society of Author's Travelling Scholarship.
