The personalities and careers of Victorian artists, and their social and intellectual context, are explored in this account which aims to reveal how they blended foreign influence with the native British tradition. Artists include the Pre-Raphaelites, Landseer, Frith, Ruskin, Whistler and Steer.
Julian Treuherz is an independent art historian and curator and an expert on Victorian art. During his time as Keeper of Fine Art at Manchester Art Gallery, he published a book on the gallery's Pre-Raphaelite collection (1980, re-issued in 1993) and an account of Ford Madox Brown's Manchester murals. Kenneth Bendimer is professor of art history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His publications include An Introduction to Victorian Painting (1985) and The Art of Ford Madox Brown (1998).
