Virago Reprints and Modern Classics by D-M Withers

The green spines of Virago's Modern Classics (VMC) illuminate late twentieth century publishing history. The series, along with the Virago Reprint Library which preceded it, offered a publishing home for many books that had been forgotten, neglected or otherwise fallen out of time. This Element elaborates how the success of Virago's reprint publishing was contingent on its convergence with different ideas about history that circulated in late 70s and early 80s Britain. These included concepts of History incubated in the women's liberation movement, especially the idea that women were not simply absent from history but hidden from it. Crucially, Virago's reprints resonated with broader historical textures, namely those of remembrance and the popular enthusiasm for heritage aesthetics, which extended the market reach of the publisher. Combined, these historically infused social contexts enabled Virago to reposition books by untimely women writers as relevant and timely to the present.
