Virtue Politics by Mingyuan Mencius
An advocate of Confucian morality, Mencius exhorted ruling through virtue during the Warring States, when sundry ideas of effectual governance prospered. Like Confucius had done two centuries before him, Mencius wandered from state to state, lobbying sovereigns. Mencian virtue politics has been pivotal to political thinking in China, though most appealing, it may be argued, to scholars. From Mencius, Mingyuan Hu selects and translates four dialogues exemplary of this thinking. This book is part of the Erstwhile Series.
It is natural to picture Mencius sitting with early humanists from Renaissance Italy, discussing virtue politics, or to picture him concurring with modern thinkers on free trade and low tax policies. Living 2,300 years ago, Mencius toured different states for 40 years, offering advice to rulers; when rejected by them all, he retired as a hermit, writing books with his disciples. In 2023, four iconic essays by Mencius were published by Hermits United in a new translation in the Erstwhile Series.
