In the year 1806, William Gilmore Simms was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Simms, a poet, novelist, and historian, was one of the most well-known and prolific writers of his time. His most important novels include The Yemassee, The Partisan, Woodcraft, The Wigwam and the Cabin, and The Biography of Francis Marion, in addition to The Cassique of Kiawah. During the Civil War, his home was burned down by Federal forces, and he suffered terribly as a result. Simms died in 1870 in Charleston.
