The War Zone by Alexander Stuart
Tom, the young narrator, sees the war zone everywhere, on the streets of London, in the Devon countryside, but above all at the heart of his outwardly safe middle class family. The choice of two of the three judges for 1989 Whitbread Novel of the Year, their decision was controversially overruled.
Alexander Stuart has written film criticism and screenplays, and was executive producer of Nicolas Roeg's film, Insignificance. He is the author of two children's books and, with Ann Totterdell, of Five and Half Times Three, a book about the life and death from cancer of their young son, Joe Buffalo Stuart. He lives in Brighton with a fine view of the sea.
