The Way of Our People by Arnold Griese
Before the time-of-the-falling leaves has passed, young Kano must ready himself for the great hunt. He ventures into the deep woods alone. There he must learn to be unafraid of the Nakini, who may take the form of man or woman; and bears, which hunters call "devil animals." He must master his terror of being lost in the dark forest. But Kano's lessons do not end here. His greatest trials - and dangers- lie ahead, when Kano's village is threatened by an outbreak of smallpox. He must convince the elders of his village to trust the medicine from a white man before time runs out. Arnold Griese's gripping tale, steeped in the legends and tradition of the Athabaskan people, is set near the Yukon River in 1838.Arnold Griese is also the author of Anna's Athabaskan Summer and The Way of Our People. He has been involved with the Athabaskan people since 1951, when he moved fromMiami to the Athabaskan village of Tanana. He lives with his wife in Fairbanks, Alaska.
