He is a published poet and short story author, as well as a novelist, screenwriter, and playwright. He's performed stand-up comedy, recited poems, and directed films. Since 1990, he has worked as a journalist. He has lived in several areas of Los Angeles and is well-versed in the city. He rented two apartments within blocks of one of Bukowski's homes (on Mariposa), so he's familiar with East Hollywood. For this book, he has visited many of Bukowski's haunts in Los Angeles, as well as interviewing Bukowski's pals. He's also buddies with one of Bukowski's best friends, Neeli Cherkovski.
