This book seeks to explore the little appreciated part in the Battle of the Somme played by the Regular and Volunteer Service battalions of two famous West Country regiments; the Devonshire Regiment and the Dorset Regiment.These two regiments had five battalions in action on the first day of the battle and were represented in most of the significant attacks.The reader will be able to form a clear picture of the battle's development as a whole through the eyes of West Country soldiers who fought on the Somme.Tim Saunders served in the British Army as an infantry officer for thirty years, during which time he had the opportunity to tour conflicts all around the world, from ancient to modern. He's been a full-time military historian since leaving the Army, and this is his sixteenth book. He's also produced approximately fifty full-length documentary films with Battlefield History and Pen & Sword. He is a Guild of Battlefield Guides Accredited Member and an active guide.
