His undergraduate studies were at Yale University and the University of California, Berkeley. Berkeley is his home, and he and his wife live in Southern California. His son is likewise a Los Angeles resident. He made a living as an urban planner, newspaper artist, and future trends analyst for firms in California.
His work has appeared in print and online publications such as Design Mind (Frog Design), Good, Harper's, Mother Jones, Road & Track, Scion, Sierra, The Atlantic, The Futurist, The New York Times, The San Francisco Examiner, The Washington Times, Tur & Retur (Swedish Railways), Txchnologist, Utne Reader, Whole Earth Review, and Box and Brutus (Japanese Railways). What the World Needs Today, published by Ten Speed Press in 1984 and 2001, and Public Therapy Buses, Information Specialty Bums, Solar Cook-A-Mats, and Other Visions of the Twenty-First Century, published by St. 1991, Martin's Press. His art has been widely disseminated on the Internet in recent years.
On his website, www.patentdepending.com, you can find a gallery of his photos as well as references to publications and limited edition giclee prints. He worked on many shows with performance artist Michael Portnoy at the Taipei Biennial in Taiwan as a consultant. He has spoken publicly about his processes for making unique, amusing, or prophetic images with guests at an art display featuring his work in Palo Alto, as well as at The Maker Faire in San Mateo and Pasadena, California, for numerous years. He has presented workshops and a public talk at Elon University in North Carolina, as well as lectures to graduate students at the School of Visual Arts and staff at Smart Design's international headquarters in New York City.
