When Football Was Football: West Ham by Iain Dale

Founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks FC the club became West Ham United in 1900 since which time the Hammers have become one of London's more successful clubs. While they have not achieved the kind of league success of some of their more glamorous London rivals they have won the FA Cup three times and the European Cup Winners' Cup.
Iain Dale is a political blogger, broadcaster, writer and fan who also runs the 'West Ham 'Till I Die' blog. It was natural that Iain should become a Hammer's fan, he did after all live in Essex. He saw his first game at Upton Park in 1977 when West Ham lost 1-0 to Chelsea.
