William Nealy is a world-renowned cartoonist who is most known for his breakthrough book Kayak, which blended excellent paddling instruction with creative caricatures and parodies of whitewater enthusiasts. The quality of his writing transcends its field; this and subsequent books created a slew of imitators and established William as a cult figure in the realm of outdoor sports. Nealy was born on February 4, 1953, in Birmingham, Alabama. He dropped out of high school before graduating and went to St. John's University. After attending Johns College, he went on to Birmingham-Southern University and received his bachelor's degree. His passions and avocations all become arts in his hands because he applied a comprehensive and rigorous intelligence to them.
