The Witch of Wookey Hole by Beth Webb
Two children who have recently lost their beloved grandmother become fascinated by a stone formation in the caves at Wookey. Resembling and old woman and her dog, it is reputed to be a woman from the middle ages who was shunned by the village and lived alone in the caves. Feeling that she is sad and cold, they smuggle clothes and food in to leave by the stone. Each day they go back, the things have gone. They wish she could come alive, but when she does they find her to be very mean and unpleasant. Eventually the 'witch' is redeemed by the love of the children and is given a home in sheltered accommodation.
BETH WEBB lives in Somerset with her four children and an entourage of pets. Her stories are mostly based on real places or events, intertwined with traditional folk legends. Her other novels for Lion Children's Books are The Magic in the Pool of Making, The Dragons of Kilve, The Witch of Wookey Hole and Foxdown Wood.
