The Work of William Morris by Paul Thompson

Whether it was art, architecture, literature, calligraphy, book design, furniture design, interior decoration or politics - William Morris brought about a revolution of taste that occurred in the second half of the 19th century. His wallpaper designs, as popular today as when he created them, are only part of his legacy. As a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, with friends Rossetti and Burne-Jones, he helped create a new style in painting, frescos and stained glass. As a trained architect, although he never practised, his thoughts contributed to a lasting change in the preservation of old buildings and in new-town planning. As a poet and writer of prose, he was much-celebrated in his own day, and admired afterwards by such figures as Yeats. And, as one of the leaders of the socialism movement, he fought for the rights of working men and women in an industrial society, and was an eloquent prophet for a socialist future. This edition of William Morris' accomplishments contains a new and expanded selection of illustrations, it has been revised to take into account the ways in which Morris' concerns anticipate those of present-day feminists, environmentalists and educationalists.
