The World Encyclopedia of Flags by Alfred Znamierowski

A revised and updated edition of a best-selling classic reference book. Comprehensively covers the fascinating world of flags, including military signs, royal standards, civic flags, naval ensigns and national flags. Detailed historical references charting the origin and development of flags from as early as 3100BC to the present day. Throughout the ages, flags have been a means of cultural and national identity and communication. From military standards flown in battle thousand of years ago, to painted faces at football matches, ensigns and emblems have always been a means of representation for groups and associations throughout the world. This is the definitive book on this subject, and it is an invaluable educational reference source. Fascinating and compelling, this volume presents a historical, geographical and political study of one of the most ancient forms of identification and statement.
Alfred Znamierowski is one of the leading figures in vexillology and the world's foremost flag artist. He began publishing numerous press articles on flags in the 1960s, and since 1965 he has undertaken extensive research in Italy, France, Germany and the United States, where he lived and worked for many years. During the last twenty years, thousands of his illustrations have been published in encyclopedias, books and journals. He has also designed flags and arms for many cities, communes, commercial firms, and individuals. In 1994 he returned to his native Poland. He is the founder of the Instytut Heraldyczno-Weksylologiczny (Institute of Heraldry and Vexillology) whose files contain thousands of specifications, laws and regulations relating to flags and arms, and which possesses one of the largest collections in the world.
