Gerhard L. was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1928. Weinberg lived in England from September 1939 to September 1940. In 1944, he moved to the United States. He was a part of the War Documentation Project, which was set up to microfilm and analyse captured Nazi documents. He retired in 1999 after teaching at the Universities of Kentucky, Michigan, and North Carolina.

Weinberg has served on and headed a number of professional organizations in the United States. Advisory boards for the government His publications have won him numerous awards, fellowships, and two honorary doctorates.
